One Crazy Summer tells the story of three sisters who travel to Oakland, California, in 1968 to meet the mother who abandoned them. Eleven year old Delphine is like a mother to her two younger sisters, Vonetta and Fern. She's had to be, ever since their mother, Cecile, left them seven years ago for a radical new life in California. When they arrive from Brooklyn to spend the summer with her, Cecile is nothing like they imagined. source: Amazon.com

February 17th - Stool in the Kitchen
What does the stool in the kitchen mean to Delphine?
The meaning of the stool for Delphine is that it’s something that her mother got her. Also its something she can watch the food with while she sits there so she doesn`t have to be so weary. Last, but not least, she gets to sit there and watch her mother make her poems. By: Druey Martin Lyon Stocking Elementary 5th grade
The meaning of the stool in the kitchen for Delphine is that Delphine uses it to cook because, Delphine’s mother which is Cecile gave it to her to use it to cook and sometimes clean the dishes. I think the meaning of the stool to Delphine is that it was her mother’s stool and her mother gave it to her. It would mean a lot to her because she knows that it means a lot to Cecile so Delphine cares about it. Cecile gave it to Delphine so it would be very special to her that she gave it to her.
Maybe Cecile gave it to Delphine because she wanted to give it to her and not the other girls. That was her first thing to give to Delphine. By Vanessa Guillen Cisneros 5th grade StockingElementary
The stool means a lot to Delphine because her mom gave it to her. Also she loves it because she could sit down while she cooks instead of standing all day.
I think the stool in the kitchen means a lot to Delphine. It means that Cecile cares about her kid so she got Delphine something that they need which was the stool so that Delphine could cook dinner for Vonetta, Fern, Cecile and herself. Also it’s like a gift from Cecile to Delphine. By: Aimerance Mbabazi Stocking Elementary 5th grade.

The stool means a lot to Delphine. I think Cecile got it for her so she could teach Delphine to help her print. Also when Delphine saw it in shreds it also represented the fight with Cecile and the cops. By: Ian Miller from Stocking Elementary 5th grade
The stool in the kitchen for Delphine means something. After a couple times that Delphine cooked in Cecile’s kitchen Cecile bought a stool for the kitchen for Delphine. This way she could sit down and cook at the same time and that meant something to Delphine. Cecile only gave Delphine a chair and not her sisters so that also means something to Delphine.

Cecile gave the stool to Delphine but not the other girls. Delphine cared about the stool that her mom had in the kitchen. Michael Childress Stocking Elementary School
The stool in the kitchen means a lot to Delphine because it means that Cecile cares and that Cecile is inviting Delphine to stay in the kitchen while Cecile is writing a poem. But Delphine has to be quiet while Cecile is in there.
To Delphine it is like everything else Cecile brought into her green stucco house, and it made everything different. It was unexpected ,and she still welcomed it. And then later that is when Cecile let Delphine go in the kitchen for the first time. And it was a invitation for her to sit down in the stool. Emma Sherwood Park
